Lasmid hails from a small town around Dunkwa, in a region that is generally simple in terms of life. To claim that music was around him all the time would not be an exaggeration. Just like most of the artists in Ghana, he drew some inspiration from local greats, especially Kofi Kinaata, who is known for his storytelling prowess and is also a native of the same area as Lasmid. Kinaata is one of the people who Lasmid acknowledges being greatly affected by, and for good reason, considering the way he elevates his roots in his products. He received his secondary education at Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI), during which he started to pay more attention to his musical gift. A hobby of freestyle rapping with friends developed into a passion and later into a man of the people.
National TV Exposure after Winning MTN Hitmaker
Lasmid's big break came in 2019. His schooling was at Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI), where he started focusing on his music career. From a hobby of freestyle rap with friends, it became a passion and then a career. Lasmid first sprung into prominence with the release of "Sika," which is considered a heartfelt anthem of Ghana. The nationwide hit was skyrocketed into different popularity stratospheres with the stunning remix by Kuami Eugene. This extremely popular song was particularly loved by the younger generations on social media and cemented his place in the spotlight. The song that truly earned Lasmid a seat at the table with big-name artists is “Friday Night,” released in 2022. The catchy and upbeat anthem has received viral praise across Ghana and beyond during the pandemic, fully taking over radio stations and TikTok. DJs, club owners, and casual listeners everywhere love its energising vibe and ultra-danceable beat.
Sound & Style
The lines that define Lasmid's songs are razor-thin because his music contains elements of Afrobeat, Highlife, Amapiano, and urban Ghanaian pop, and none of them stick out starkly more than the others. His genre-defying abilities are only overshadowed by his seamless transitioning between rap and melody. His lyrics, often a fusion of English, Twi, and Pidgin, are always relatable to a global audience while maintaining his identification as a Ghanaian. His themes include a broad array of topics, such as love, hustling, personal issues, struggles, and joyful celebrations. Even though most of his songs have light-hearted and entertaining vibes, you can often scratch the surface, and there is bound to be a deep message that showcases his growth and experiences.
From Ghana to The Worlds
The momentum for Lasmid increased in 2024 when he garnered the attention of Apple Music, which featured him in their Up Next program, a global platform for emerging entertainers. This feat placed him on the map internationally as he was able to showcase his music beyond West Africa. In the same year, Lasmid signed with Dapper Music, an upcoming Nigerian label with a reputation for scouting new African talent. This shift indicates his plans to move outside of Ghana into larger territories like Nigeria, South Africa, and the diaspora.
Lasmid Leaving The Label, Gaining Independence
Lasmid seems to be following in the footsteps of his fellow Ghanaian artists as he was able to gain more control and trim his limits geographically. His changes in direction make it clear to everyone that he left the label where his early career was set, Highly Spiritual Music, in mid-2023. Their separation seemed to have been smooth, as Lasmid was willing to pursue new creative directions.
His Future Career as Lasmid
Seeing how new management and the rapidly growing fans are bound to make him one of the top, if not the most prominent figure in the African music industry, Lasmid’s future career seems bright. The combination of tradition, fads, and heart makes him stand out even more in an already competitive field.
